We are learning so much about places in California other than Napa and Sonoma that can grow amazing Cabernet. One of those places is Red Hills, just north of Napa in Lake County. Trust me, for the money, this stuff is absolutely mind blowing. We all love Napa but it is great to get a beautiful Cabernet from California that tastes like Napa without the Napa prices.
“Planted 2,600 feet high on the Mayacamas range north of Napa Valley, Obsidian ridge Vineyards grows mountain fruit. The steep slopes at this altitude are reddened by iron rich volcanic soils and littered with black shards of obsidian. Here in the Red Hills of Lake county the distinctive soils and mountain climate grow varietally vibrant and powerfully structured Cabernet Sauvignon.”
Oh, and lest I forget, this wine will be #42 on Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 of 2019 in their December issue. Jump all over this one!

True Cabernet Sauvignon character stands out, opening in an aromatic riot of blackberry jam, a touch of herb, spice, and coffee. The wine is full-bodied, expanding mid-palate with a dense core of black fruit, black cherries, and cacao beans; the finish lingers with a perfume of dried raspberries and rose water. The distinctive tannic structure of mountain-grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot hints at the aging potential of this wine.
