Each year Benoit’s blend varies in his “effort to capture all the incredible diversity that Napa Valley has to offer with different varietals, terroir, elevation, and exposure.” The fruit, however, is always sourced from multiple premium vineyards that Benoit works with regularly in Calistoga, Pritchard Hill, Yountville and Saint Helena when crafting his Cabernet knockouts for Jack Quinn, Realm, Kata and Fait-Main. This year’s blend is composed of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 5% Zinfandel, and 5% Petit Sirah. Once again, a most brilliant and cohesive equation! Aged in 65% new French oak, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is powerful, well balanced and boasting with fresh aromatics. Pops of blackberry, raspberry and vanilla first grabs your attention then invites you into a bouquet of thyme, French lavender and violets. Bordeaux varietals round out the wine to offer a supple palate and impeccably balanced tannins.
Another terrific value, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 5% each Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. Production is way down due to the fires, but it’s a smoking wine with its bright, juicy blackberry and cassis fruit interwoven with plenty of graphite and toasted spice. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and sweetly fruited, it has ripe tannins and is well worth seeking out.
