The 2013 Vieux Chateau Mazerat received a 94-point rating, but when we had it at the tasting, it didn’t show as well as the other vintages. And a 94-point wine should be singing, right?! Well, after the tasting had ended, the mop-up crew (Gerald and I) tried it again, and it was a completely different wine. The fruit was bright, the structure and balance was spot-on, and it went from being unimpressive to one of my top 2 wines of the tasting! Three hours of decanting really brought it around to becoming everything we heard it would be, which was unfortunate for the tasting that night, but great news for the 2013. The Merlot brought the depth, juicy palate and velvety texture while the Cab Franc brought the power and complexity. What a stunner!
Sophisticated and full of fruit, this wine combines the freshness of the year with great tension and structure. The juicy underlay will develop well over the next few years. It’s complex and worth aging. Drink from 2024.
